What a custom build means for you
For clients who want maximum flexibility and performance, I build fully custom sites from the ground up in HTML, CSS and JavaScript. That comes with its own trade-offs against a platform build on Shopify or Squarespace.
Hosting and ongoing costs
- Lower cost: Hosting a custom-coded site is usually far cheaper than platform subscription fees, especially outside e-commerce.
- Your responsibility: You hold your own hosting plan. I will recommend one.
Edits and ownership
- Developer-led edits: By default every change to a custom-coded site is made by a developer, which is me.
- No visual editor: Unlike Shopify or Squarespace, a standard custom build has no built-in interface for you to edit it yourself.
- Full ownership: Request a transfer at any time and you receive the complete folder of code. Managing it takes technical knowledge.
Content management
In development- I am building a CMS designed specifically for my custom-coded sites, so clients can edit, add and remove content through a simple interface. The performance of a custom build with the ease of a platform editor. Ask about it during a consultation.
What sits outside a quote
What is not included
- Website host: ReadyMag, Webflow, Framer, Shopify and the like. Price varies by provider, as does an e-commerce host such as Shopify, Ecwid or Stripe.
- Domain: $5 - $100, covering the subdomain and URL handle.
- Plugins: $150 each, or $250 where setup is required.
Other expenses
- Ongoing maintenance: Covered by a care plan, from $49 a month. See the plans above.
- Extra pages: $150 per page.
- Plugins: $100 each, or $200 where full setup is required. Consultation required.
- Post-launch changes: Minor edits are free and included in maintenance. Major changes need a consultation.
- Custom code and features: Quoted at $95 an hour for anything not covered by an existing plugin or platform capability. You get a detailed estimate after a consultation, and the final invoice is based on hours actually logged.

Client asset delivery
Once a project begins I give it my time exclusively. To hold the timeline, all final assets, meaning logos, text and images, need to reach me within 14 days. Past that the project is paused out of respect for other clients and rescheduled to the next available slot, with an $80 rebooking fee to secure it.

- Refunds: Not offered once work has started. Exceptions are considered case by case after the free revisions.
